ROOT SPORTS is the television home of the Seattle Mariners, Seattle Kraken, Portland Trail Blazers, Seattle Seahawks, Seattle Seawolves, and Gonzaga Bulldogs. The network delivers more than 500 live events each year across a five-state footprint. ROOT SPORTS is operated by AT&T Sports Networks, which operates regional sports networks in the Northwest, Pittsburgh, Rocky Mountain and Southwest regions.

The Goal

Production Control Refresh

The growth of Root Sports as a live sports programmer, and their early adoption of REMI style production, became the impetus for a refresh of the production control environment at the company’s Pacific Northwest headquarters.

Improvements were required to right-size the control room, increase efficiency, and enhance performance of live operations well into the future. The advent of SMPTE ST2110 would allow design sophistication not previously available, and establish Root Sports as a key leader in REMI production.

The Challenge

Advanced needs drive an advanced approach

The PCR refresh would require both a technology uplift and an environmental remodel that best suited the complex and dynamic operations Root Sports had become since its launch. Balancing the replacement of end of life technologies with ST2110 platforms for REMI production, while integrating into still viable legacy SDI infrastructure, required careful consideration and planning.

It was crucial for ZTransform to gain an understanding for the operational requirements well enough to design the physical space around how the team would now work.

The Solution

Collaborative Efforts

ZTransform directed the project from the outset including definition of functional requirements, technology selection, and budgeting through a series of Discovery sessions. The design goals and project schedule drove just-in-time deployment efforts across multiple trades; from MEP to Interiors, and deep into the ZTransform Integration team and the Root Sports operation.

This coordination required ZTransform to project manage the total construction process and perform all system testing and operator training in preparation for the relaunch. This was a ground up replacement of all control room systems, tech furniture, raised floor, acoustical ceiling and wall treatments, lighting, and electrical services.

The Result

High Performance and
Ease of Use

Upon completion, the new Root Sports production control room provided an ergonomic elegance and system-level efficiency perfectly matched to the evolved operational needs. The new ST2110 platforms provided seamless interoperability with the existing platforms and allowed the operators to focus on the added features of the in-room technology and expanded REMI capabilities.

The team was now poised to support the increased capacity and dynamics of the Root Sports properties for years to come.
