Augustana University launched its NCAA Division I men’s hockey program in 2024 as part of its ambitious “Viking Bold” strategic plan. Central to this expansion was the opening of Midco Arena—a $72 million venue designed to elevate both athletic performance and fan experience.

The Goal

Broadcast-Ready Arena for a New Division I Program

Augustana needed a media infrastructure that could support live coverage of hockey games, in-venue content delivery, and remote production workflows.

The goal was to create a system that could accommodate external production trucks (like Midco Sports Network), integrate with legacy campus studios, and serve the diverse needs of athletics, marketing, and content teams—all while meeting NCAA standards and sponsor expectations.

ZTransform was able to balance the diverse needs of all our stakeholders, including sponsors, marketing and content creators to build an engaging environment that works for everyone.

The Challenge

Design Flexibility in a Compressed Timeline

Midco Arena’s media requirements evolved rapidly during construction, with new spaces and workflows added late in the process. ZTransform had to pivot quickly to accommodate unplanned control areas, ergonomic workstations, and connectivity between the arena and existing campus infrastructure.

The challenge was to deliver a robust, scalable system that could serve multiple stakeholders—without compromising quality or delaying launch.

The Solution

End-to-End AV Integration with Campus Connectivity

ZTransform designed and installed the arena’s main frame room, press box systems, camera rigging, lighting, production control room, replay systems, and audio suites. The team also linked Midco Arena to the university’s existing TV studios, enabling seamless content flow between locations. The infrastructure supports up to 14 live cameras, external truck integration, and in-house streaming—giving Augustana full control over its media output.

The team delivered a full AV and broadcast infrastructure for Augustana University’s Midco Arena, enabling South Dakota’s first NCAA Division I hockey program and transforming the venue into a media-ready, multi-use facility.

ZTransform pivoted quickly to meet new demands and customized spaces that weren’t originally designed into the plans. They were really creative with workstation ergonomics and expertly figured out connectivity solutions to make the new building work with legacy infrastructure of the existing studios.

The Result

Broadcast, Streaming, and Community Engagement

Midco Arena now operates as a fully integrated media venue, supporting live TV coverage, in-house production, and hybrid workflows. ZTransform’s infrastructure allows Augustana to deliver high-quality broadcasts, engage fans with dynamic in-venue content, and support external partners with plug-and-play access. The system balances technical sophistication with operational ease, empowering the university to grow its media presence alongside its athletic ambitions.
